How to Get Smoke Smell Out of a Smoker’s Home
[HOOK — Warm, conversational tone]
Have you ever walked into a house and noticed the smell of cigarette smoke before you even made it through the front door?
Maybe you’ve lived in that home for years and hardly notice it anymore. Maybe you’re getting a house ready to sell, helping a family member move, or trying to make a fresh start in a home that has a long history of smoking.
Here’s the good news: you can make a real difference. But there’s a catch. Getting cigarette smoke out of a home takes more than opening a window, spraying some air freshener, or lighting a candle.
Welcome to Clean & Local, the podcast from Ligonier Valley Cleaners, where we talk about practical ways to keep our homes, businesses, and community clean.
Today, we’re talking about how to get that stubborn smoke smell out of a smoker’s home — respectfully, realistically, and without wasting your money on solutions that only cover up the problem.

Now, let’s get into three things you need to know.
[POINT ONE — Start with the soft surfaces]
First, deal with the things that absorb smoke.
Cigarette smoke doesn’t just float through the air and disappear. Its residue settles into fabrics and porous materials. Think carpets, upholstery, curtains, bedding, rugs, and even mattresses.
These materials can hold onto odors long after someone has stopped smoking in the home.
Start by washing what can safely be washed. Launder curtains and bedding according to their care instructions. Clean removable cushion covers, and vacuum carpets and upholstery thoroughly using appropriate equipment.
But here’s the important part: vacuuming alone won’t remove all the smoke residue, and heavily affected carpets or padding may need professional treatment — or even replacement.
If a home has years of accumulated smoke odor, sometimes the carpet padding is part of the problem. You can clean the surface and still have that smell coming right back.
[POINT TWO — Clean the surfaces you might overlook]
Second, remember that smoke residue settles on hard surfaces, too.
Walls, ceilings, doors, trim, cabinets, light fixtures, and window coverings can all collect a film of residue over time.
That’s why a home can look reasonably clean but still smell like smoke.
The solution is to clean those surfaces using products appropriate for the material. Pay special attention to kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where residue may have accumulated.
Walls and ceilings can be particularly challenging. Aggressive scrubbing or the wrong cleaning solution can damage paint or finishes, so test products in an inconspicuous spot and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
And if the odor has penetrated the paint itself, cleaning may not be enough. In some cases, a suitable odor-blocking primer and repainting may be necessary after the surfaces have been properly cleaned.
The principle is simple: don’t just make the room smell better. Remove the residue that’s causing the smell.
[POINT THREE — Find the hidden sources]
Third, don’t overlook the places you can’t easily see.
Smoke odor can linger in HVAC filters, ductwork, unfinished spaces, and other areas where dust and residue have accumulated. Replace the HVAC filter as appropriate, and consider professional HVAC inspection or cleaning if the system itself appears to be contributing to the odor.
Check closets, cabinets, window tracks, and other enclosed spaces, too.
And please don’t rely on air fresheners, scented candles, or odor-masking sprays as your main strategy. They may temporarily make a room smell different, but they don’t remove the underlying contamination.
For homes with heavy, long-term smoke exposure, the full solution may involve several steps: detailed cleaning, carpet or padding replacement, HVAC attention, and possibly sealing and repainting affected surfaces.
There isn’t one magic product that fixes every home. The key is identifying where the odor is coming from and addressing those sources in the right order.
[COMMERCIAL BREAK — Practical call to action]
If you’re listening and thinking, “That sounds like a lot of work,” you’re not wrong.
And if you’re dealing with a home that has years of smoke residue, you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.
At Ligonier Valley Cleaners, we help homeowners and property owners tackle the kind of cleaning projects that require more than a quick wipe-down. We can help assess the cleaning work involved and discuss practical next steps for getting a property ready for its next chapter.

[CLOSING — Warm, encouraging tone]
And one final thought: a home’s smell doesn’t tell you the whole story about the people who live there.
Sometimes life gets complicated. Sometimes a house needs a reset. And sometimes helping someone move forward starts with giving them a clean, comfortable place to live.
So if you’re tackling smoke odor, start with the soft surfaces, clean the residue off the hard surfaces, and investigate the hidden sources. Take it one step at a time.
